Here in America, the Starbucks chain of coffee shops just stopped using plastic straws. They made a big deal out of it, like they were doing so much to save the environment. Then somebody weighed their new lids and found out it actually contains more plastic than the old lid plus the straw!
Seriously, why can't we just drink out of porcelain cups and then wash them?
I drove my friend to the airport some months back and some of the village children wanted to go as well to see the airport. We stopped at a Burger King in Rangsit because the kids never had been such a place but only seen the advertisements on TV.
There they served the meals on porcelain plates, with a steel fork and knife, and drinks in glasses.
There is a lot of recycling, but as I mentioned in my reply to freemarketekev it is only the stuff who have a value who does get picked up by bypassers.
Love your new slogan, hope you do not think that I am not thinking first.
Kisses
At work I'm able to recycle most of the plastic I use. Since there is no garbage pickup by you are there recycling plants or something similar that can find a new use for it?
All the bigger items like bottles and cans are being collected by the poor old people who walk with their push carts along the roads every day, but the thin bags are not, guess you will have to bend down several thousand times to pick up to get a bath worth if collecting thin bags.
Buying a 20 (0.6$) bath meal from a street vendor you will typically get your food in a foam flip box with a rubber band, then 3 spices and sauces in each their bag, with each their rubber band and all put in a plastic bag with handle.

Ugh, in such a beautiful setting as well. What a shame there is no rubbish collection or recycling.
Perhaps a business opportunity to start one?
