Oregon coast weekend travels in January 2018

in #nature7 years ago

While I am on a work assignment on the Oregon coast, Siuslaw National Forest from my regular station on the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota, I want to share some photos of the area and a hidden gem that even locals rarely see. (Taken in January by me with moto g5plus)

IMG_20180112_133834718-EFFECTS.jpg This place is called Niagra Falls and the sister falls of Pheasant Falls. The trail is downhill a little over a mile with an elevation drop of a little over 300 feet. They are about 150 feet from each other and their flows combine into one stream. I took a video but have not learned how to add it. Even residents cant find this hidden gem. January is a rainy cool month, but people from the Northwest always are ready to take advantage of the weather! Beyond is cape disappointment which is just north of the mouth of Columbia River.
These elk came through my late grandparents place while I was visiting the coast (lucky to still keep it in the family). They were a herd of about a 100 elk and the long horn cattle came over to give them a stare down. Moss is a dominant on the Oregon coasts trees, especially evident in winter.
