The Chipko movement has a direct meaning to protect it by sticking to something. The Chipko movement started in Uttarakhand, the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, which separated from Uttar Pradesh in 2000 and became a new state. The Chipko movement was a rural movement to protect an environment. It started in 1973 in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Then the village farmers of the village fought the Chipko movement against the cutting of forests and jungles by state forest contractors.Chipko-Andolan.jpg

In order to prevent deforestation, the men and women of the village wrestled with trees and used to let the contractors not cut trees. There were more women in this movement. In this movement, the famous environmental lover Sunderlal Bahuguna, Chandiprasad Bhatt, Smt. Gaura Devi and villagers of the village organized this movement together. This movement has also been conferred with the Samyak Jeevika Award.
