Gardening Know How

The Bromeliad family are popular house plants. Their colourful flowers make them a cheerful addition to your room.

After about six months though your Bromeliad loses its appeal as the flower dies.

It begins to look like this:

Rather unattractive, isn't it?

Look carefully at the base of the stalk.

You will find some new baby Bromeliads, known as pups.

To propagate your Bromeliad, tip it out of its pot and carefully separate the pups from the parent. You can now discard the parent.

I try to give them a little root. Bromeliads are shallow rooted so they don't need much to start them off.

Dig a hole in a new pot of all-purpose compost.

Place your pup in the hole, pack around with well-pressed-down compost.

Here are your new Bromeliads!

Water them in their cups just like you did with the parent.

Now I have one for myself and one to give away. Can't be bad!
