The Rain Makers : The Blackbird
Blackbirds are fascinating birds to watch. They usually arrive in the garden in late evening and you can see the running up and down the garden and then listening at the ground below them. What they are actually doing is..
When the run backwards and forwards along the ground they are mimicking the sound of falling rain. When the worms here the sound they move to the surface so as not to drown from heavy rain water. The blackbird will listen for them moving and as soon as they reach the surface they will grab them and pull them out of the ground whole with just enough force so as not to snap them
Here you can see a young probably female blackbird listening for worms
And here again listening
Male Blackbirds are black with yellow beaks but the Females are brown with a brown beak .
