There are a lot of tribute and cover bands here too. It's harder for those who want to play their own music, but people want to hear stuff they know. At least you were playing music you love. Do you think bass players are more in demand than guitarists? There are so many guitarists out there. I'm sure good singers can pick and choose who they play with.
That's true, I played in a band called "The Grit" , which only played own material. It was much harder to find venues where we could play. We more participated in all kinds of contests to get some exposure. I do think bassplayers are more in demand, just like drummers. The problem here in Zutphen is that there are mostly Heavy metal (and harder) bands. So you don't have lot to choose from :)
