My tastes tend to be more to progressive metal and alternative so this is what you will probably expect from me today and going forward.

I was watching some music documentary on one of the FreeView channels last night about Girls in Rock. I tend to home in on these as I can usually learn something, maybe pick up on an old tune or simply remember the past when in my opinion, music was better than it is now.

So this is the basis of this week’s Metal Weekend. It’s not really going to be very Metal, more Alternative.

The Breeders - Cannonball

While I’m not a big fan of ‘The Breeders’, I am a fan of Kim Deal who was the bass player in ‘The Pixies’. However this was to be their big hit and I first heard it on MTV around 1993 when they kept using it as one of their jingles. It was to be years later that I realised just what song this jingle was from.

Just like The Pixies, there is that underlying sense of humour that can be seen in both the video and the outlandish name of the band. This is probably the only song from today’s offerings that you may have heard before, such are my obscure tastes.

Sonic Youth - Beauty Lies in the Eye

I once watched a music documentary regarding The Pixies in which David Bowie describes the band as ‘just about the most compelling music outside Sonic Youth’. The short Bowie clip is here, but the full documentary was mandatory viewing to me.

It’s a real shame that the band split in the last few years after being together for what seems forever.

I found this band extremely hard to crack, but now love their sound. Detuned guitars make more interesting sounds, and sometimes the bass player Kim Gordon did the vocals. She doesn’t really sing, more talk over the song but it somehow fits. This one is quite psychedelic and the video really fits the music.

Wolf Alice - Planet Hunter

I tried in vain to find three ‘Kim’s for this article I could only manage two, so the last one will have to be ‘Ellie.’

I am a big fan of Wolf Alice and even saw them live last year in Newcastle. This song is not rocky to start with but gets going nicely near the end, and is now my favourite track from the excellent ‘Visions of a Life’ album.

The band were due to tour The US after their UK gigs, I hope they can find an audience and get the attention they deserve. Among the new bands that I have heard recently, they really do stand out.
