DILLA TRIBUTE: HouseShoes - The King James Version [DJ mix]
Get to know your J Dilla samples with this superbly selected DJ mix from House Shoes! (audio)
So if you were unaware, James Yancey, aka Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, aka Filth McNasty's birthday was yesterday (or today, depending on where you live). So in order to celebrate what would've been the legendary producers 44th birthday, I present to you "The King James Version", a DJ mix selected and mixed by none other than J's good friend, House Shoes. But rather than just being a collection of hits or favorites from Dilla, House Shoes dug a bit deeper and went to the source: the samples. The mix does two fold: 1) reveal a lot of his samples in their original form, and 2) also show off the wide-scope of music that Dilla listened to/got his inspiration from. From jazz, soul, and funk, to rock, psych, electronic music, and more, there really wasn't a genre that was off-limits to Dilla as producer, and House Shoes does an excellent job of exhibiting all the different genres that Dilla was into. If you're looking to expand your musical tastes and pay your respects to Dilla, I can't think of a finer mix to listen to.
I absolutely love Dilla's beats. He has been kind of an early influence on some of my own productions, although less so lately. The mix isn't necessarily smooth to listen to, but it is very interesting to see where he got some of his influences from and what he listened to. I love that he had such a diverse and eclectic taste. And there are some great gems in there that I didnt know.
Thank you for sharing.
If there's one criticism I would levy against the mix, I wish the tracks were a bit more cohesive in the way they flowed from one to another. But I feel like this mix is much more of a collage of Dilla sample sources, rather than it being a typical DJ mix.
