Looking through some of my favourite Tom Waits Ballads I came across this gem ... sometimes up late at night and blogging or typing away on whatever and maybe having a beer or a bottle of wine I remember this song and this Video.
What struck me when I first heard Tom Waits was surprise - surprise that adults might celebrate a broken-down sound...when they unilaterally promote drive and ambition. Tom Waits was like the antithesis of everything I was told to strive to be :-) and it was acceptable and applauded. It was quite a revelation.
I was first introduced to Tom Waits as a teenager when he was a guest on Gay Byrne's Late Late Show on RTE Television in Ireland. He sang this song.
