I'd like to tell you about a program I co-founded: Accessing Music Promoting Success.

Accessing Music is an exciting new program that enables individuals with disabilities, typically aging adults, or anyone curious about music, to play and perform in a group setting. This is achieved using the latest in music technology, including our cutting-edge tablet and keyboard system, expertly implemented with the principles of occupational therapy.

We're presenting our first public demonstration this Saturday, July 22, in Bridgewater, New Jersey. If there are any Steemians in NJ please come say hello!

About Accessing Music Promoting Success

Accessing Music Promoting Success was formed in Somerset County, New Jersey, in 2016 by Co-Founder/Program Director Karen Z. Kowalski, MPH, OTR, and Co-Founder/Technology Director Tom Brislin.

Karen specializes in teaching music to all age groups, with a full range of disabilities and also to the typically aging adult. She has been involved with adaptive music education since 1998. Within that timeframe, she pioneered an innovative approach to promote quality of living by empowering her students of all ages to both create and perform music. Karen was presented with the 2016 Somerset County Disability Advocacy Award, 2017 Somerset County Cultural Heritage Association Award and has published numerous articles related to adaptive music from the perspective of occupational therapy. In 2007 she authored and published the book Playing It Their Way: An Innovative Approach to Teaching Piano to Individuals with Physical and/or Mental Disabilities.

Tom is a professional musician who has performed worldwide with several of the biggest names in pop and rock music, including Meat Loaf, Debbie Harry of Blondie, and 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Yes. Trained in classical piano and jazz, he is also versed in the latest in electronic music technology. He is the author of 30-Day Keyboard Workout, has been a Senior Correspondent for Keyboard Magazine, and provides instruction for individuals and groups. Having observed Karen’s prior work with individuals with disabilities, Tom was eager to incorporate his knowledge of music technology by customizing tablet applications into a system that could be easily “played” by a group.

Accessing Music Promoting Success has implemented programs with The Arc of Somerset County, Intensive Therapeutics, Visiting Angels, The Rock Brook School, Somerset School of Music, Vision Loss Alliance, First Montclair House, and other groups.
