“A Forest” by The Cure (Robert Smith) – SteemitCentral Lyrics Challenge – Day 39 / 60
“I'm lost in a forest, All alone. The girl was never there”
song ~ “A Forest”
artist ~ The Cure
Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees
Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again and again (Image source)

Released in 1980 on The Cure’s second album, this “really atmospheric” song introduced many listeners to the band’s unique sound, and became one of the signature tunes from its early years.
No Light in the Dark
The calm but disquieting melody leads in to Robert Smith’s plaintive, distant vocals. Something is beckoning the protagonist towards something in a forest – something promising.
What he’s hoping to find is a girl, although it’s not clear who she is. She remains dark and mysterious, and she remains somewhere out there, in the dark.
Darkness and Despair
As it turns out, there is no girl anywhere in the forest. He’s lost, alone, and deluded.
The final line is one of Smith’s finest and most evocative lyrics – “It’s always the same. I’m running towards nothing. Again and again and again and again.”
Within the space of this 5-minute song, hope and promise have given way to disorientation, hopelessness, and despair. This is a sad story/lyrics. I can imagine how heartbroken and unhappy the protagonist will be upon discovering that there was no girl in the forest.
Too many times in life, we hope to get the best but we find nothing, nothing worthwhile. That, however, should not stop us from hinder us from aspiring.
This song is heart touching
