The misconceptions of a "Record Deal".

in #music7 years ago (edited)

A ton of indie artists associate record deals with success. This is a common misconception.

The ideal goal for most local artist is to have a record label end up at one of their shows and to have overnight success. The reality of this is just...slim.. it is not like it doesnt happen but it definitely is not the only path to success in the music industry.

Bank Loan

I like to compare a record deal like a bank loan with resources. To explain further you basically get handed a chunk of money and a list of contacts, and from there you are expected to pay that back to your label. The funding is definitely needed for success but the record label certainly is not the only path.

If you want my advice focus on what the label does for you. It has 3 steps of production to make the business happen.

1. Product

Your album, online content, videos, performance, etc.

2. Marketing

How do you promote your product? Through ads, publicity stunts, etc.

3. Distribution

How do you paid distribute your music? Itunes? Radio? Youtube? Shows?

The record label will hire people to do these jobs. In the next couple of posts I will go into more information on Product, Marketing, and Distribution Individually. Networking will help you develop the relationships needed. These tactics will not only help you grow as an artist, but also help gain attention from record labels (if you want that) or continue as an indie artist but PAID.

I hope this helps with your music endeavors! Make sure you follow for more information! Love you guys!
