Muscle Cramp - How To Relieve Them
How to Relieve a Muscle Cramp
Common causes and solutions
Symptoms
Most muscle cramps (also known as “charley horses”) develop in the leg muscles, particularly in the calf. Besides the sudden, sharp pain, you might also feel or see a hard lump of muscle tissue beneath your skin that twitches.
Common Causes
Overuse of a muscle, dehydration, low electrolyte levels, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a prolonged period can cause a muscle cramp. In many cases, however, the cause isn't known.
Although most muscle cramps are harmless, some may be related to an underlying medical condition, such as:
Bad circulation
Not enough stretching
Muscle fatigue
Working muscles too hard during exercise
Deficiency in magnesium and/or potassium
A spinal cord injury or pinched nerve in neck or back
Side effects of certain medications
Muscle Cramps are painful
Ways to prevent them
Try to relax and stretch your muscles out, especially before strenuous activity and within the affected areas.
Massage the muscle, put ice on it, and take a bath with Epsom salt added.
