Dera steemians,

If you have never visited Malaysia, you will never know what is the Cat Mountain King or Musang King Durian. Raja Kunyit or Musang (Malay language) King or Mau Shan Wang (Chinese language) or Cat Mountain King durian is simply one of the famous species of the varieties of durians found in Malaysia. Why is this species of durian famous?

My first taste of this Mountain Cat King durian was a few years ago when I visited Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia with a few closed friends. The Cat Mountain King durian fruit is the same as other durian species. The fruit shape is oval to ellipsoid and has a light green husk. It has a thick, golden yellow flesh, very smooth with little or no fibres. Sticky and creamy texture. Sweet and bitter taste. Mau Shan Wang or Cat Mountain King durian is the most popular variety at present.

The fruits are sold at very high price about USD S$13-15 per kg because of its taste and demand. Many more plantations of this clone are planted in Perak and other states in Malaysia. Soon the supply will exceed its demand and the price will be normal.

Why is this species of durian having such a peculiar name?
It is very interesting to note that the word "musang" in Malay here does not referred to the civet cat but rather to the region "Gua Musang" in Kelantan state, where this clone was first planted and became very popular among the farmers there. The Malay word Musang means Cat and that is how the Mountain Cat King durian has its name.

Now this special species or clone is cultivated in big plantations in Raub and Bentong Pahang, Malaysia.
Here is the picture of how the fruits look like in the tree.

Where can you get the genuine Musang King durians?

If you buy on the road side in Kuala Lumpur, you are likely to be cheated because of many unscrupulous traders using D24 or other species as a disguise of the Mountain Cat King durians to jack up the price.

And if you are the first time buyer, the chance is that you will not known the taste of the Musang King durians.

You need to get help from the locals or take a trip to Bentong or Raub in Pahang to taste the genuine Mountain Musang King durians from the plantations and you will never forget the taste. Once you have tasted the Mountain Cat King durians, you can easily differentiate its taste from the other inferior species like the D24 and others which are usually cheaper.

Durians is the King of All fruits. Research shows that the durian plant is only native to Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei and to some belief, the Davao region of Philippines.

In Malaysia, the name “durian” is derived from the Malay word “duri” which means spike and is regarded as the King of fruits thanks to its spike-covered husk, the creamy yellow golden flesh and most crucially, the strong aroma that is only prized by selective number of people.

There are so many varieties and some of them taste horrible. But if you have tasted the Mountain Cat King durians you will have a special liking for durians. This is my personal opinion and my own experience. Before I tasted the Mountain Cat King durians, I did not like durians because of many of its inferior qualities and tastes. But after tasting the Mountain Musang King durians I seem to have fallen in love with the taste of durians and always look forward to taste it whenever I visit Malaysia.
