Universal Pictures Vs. The Walt Disney Company
I know that because of the Marvel vs. DC rivalry it is more common to think that Warner Bros. is Disney's biggest competitor, but they are not. Despite not having a competitive reputation it is Universal Pictures that are Disney's biggest competition. In fact, it wasn't so long ago, in 2015 to be exact, that it was Universal Pictures that was the highest grossing studio of the year. The Walt Disney Company rules this record every year now, but maybe it will change.
Even now, they are the only studio beside Disney that has movies in the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time. They have Furious 7 and Jurassic World. Now that Disney owns Fox and so many other studios they own their own competition. But despite Warner Bros. reputation, it is Universal Pictures that plans to continue to challenge the house of mouse.
Sure, they had some bumps along the way, but also had some successes. This weekend The Invisible Man is set to hit theaters and get the hearts of horror fans racing in fear. With a budget of only 7 million dollars this movie seems like a promising start to their box office competition.
This year Fast and Furious 9 will try and break some serious records. The real obstacle in its way is the fact that China, a giant box office market for this movie, is off the board for the foreseeable future. Still, the trailer seems to play on those nostalgia strings which is an efficient method to get people into theaters.
Also, the real competitor for Frozen 2 is Minions: The Rise of Gru. I know that it sounds crazy, but the previous movie made 1.1 billion dollars, and most of that money came from Europe. So the competition is on even in the animation area.
Plus the year will end with Halloween Kills as it appears that the Halloween franchise is here to stay. And make lots of money.
But it is 2021 that seems to be the most interesting year and the most competitive.
It was just announced that the next Jurassic World movie will be called Jurassic World: Dominion and dominate the box office it shall. All the actors from the previous movies will be back and people love their nostalgia. Even Joseph Mazzello who played Tim in Jurassic Park hinted that he will be back. The movie is being compared to Avenger: Endgame and Fast and Furious 5, but what it really wants is their box office numbers. Considering how just mediocre the previous movie was I am not sure it can happen. But if the movie plays all the right cards it can make about 2 billion dollars I think.
The closing and finale chapter of the Fast and Furious franchise is also set for 2021, which might be a one two punch at the box office. The words finale usually brings a lot of people into theaters.
Sing will also get a sequel that comes out in 2021. Considering how adorable the first one was, this one will probably make more than the 600 million dollars the previous installment made.
They also have some untitled horror movies slated, those are always good as they are cheap to make and always cover their costs. But Halloween Ends seems to be a potential blockbuster more than another horror movie. The finality in the name of the movie could bring many people to the theater.
Plus that Wicked movie that has been in development forever is set for 2021 and could potentially be a hit if done right.
Universal Pictures also purchased the movie rights to The Mister by E. L. James. That might sound terrible, but the Fifty Shades movies made a lot of money. Plus, people who loved Fifty Shades will go see this movie. And be disappointed as it is more of a political romance and not an erotic love story. I guess you won't hear the words human trafficking in the trailer for this movie. But bring money it shall.
So yeah, this is how you compete with Disney. Not with comic book movies. But just with good movies and some heavy franchises. Could Universal Pictures compete with three Marvel movies and Disney-Live Action? Looks like they are the only studio who is really willing to try.
I'm not even going to start the theme parks conversation.
Do you think that Universal can make more money than Disney?

Nice overview of the movie battlefield between these two giants.
Also, lots of great info! I didn't know all those original actors were coming back for Jurassic Park. Very cool!

Thank you so much for such a great comment. Yeah, all the actors will be back for the Jurassic movies, the old actors and the newer ones. Only the girl from the first movie isn’t confirmed for the movie, but she stopped acting so that might be a problem.
