Poetic Television Review: Civilisation (1969)
In hallowed halls of broadcasting's might,
A legend rose, a beacon in the night,
The BBC, a name that echoes through the years,
A premier broadcaster, with wisdom and tears.
Civilisation, a series of thirteen tales,
A journey through the ages, with art and culture's gales,
Kenneth Clark, a guide, with eyes that saw the grand,
A personal view, a subjective hand.
With colour cinematography, and music's gentle sway,
The series transported audiences to a bygone day,
Stunning locations, and actors of renown,
Brought history to life, in a world turned upside down.
But critics' eyes, with modernity's gaze,
Saw flaws in Clark's approach, and Eurocentric ways,
The omission of cultures, that once did thrive,
Left gaps in the narrative, and a biased stride.
Yet, in its flaws, the series found a way,
To spark discussions, on identity's gray,
Cultural heritage, and historical might,
A template for documentaries, that shone with light.
The years have passed, and Civilisation's fame,
Endures, a testament to Clark's artistic claim,
A series that changed the game, and set the pace,
For a new era of broadcasting, with a wiser face.
A personal view, a subjective stance,
That challenged norms, and took a stand,
In the annals of broadcasting's history,
Civilisation stands, a shining legacy.
