Poetic Film Review: Three (Tri, 1965)
In Yugoslavia's cinematic past,
Two trends converged, forever to last,
Partisan films and Black Wave's might,
In "Three", a film that shines with insight bright.
Aleksandar Petrović's masterpiece unfolds,
A triptych of stories, interconnected and bold,
Miloš Bojanić, the protagonist, we follow and see,
Through war-torn years, in a world of chaos and spree.
The first story begins, amidst paranoia and fear,
A photographer mistaken, his life cut short, so dear,
The second tale takes us to mountainous terrain,
Where Miloš fights on, as a Partisan, with heart in pain.
Žabac's sacrifice, a poignant moment in time,
A fleeting sense of hope, amidst the brutal grind,
The final segment nears the war's conclusion cold,
Miloš now an officer, with moral conflicts to unfold.
A Gestapo agent, a woman so fair and bright,
Captivates Miloš's heart, yet justice demands her plight,
He grapples with feelings, amidst the harsh realities of war,
A powerless hero, in a world that's lost its shore.
"Three" stands out as a film of its era so grand,
Despite its brief running time and black-and-white land,
Critics praise its structure; each story connected by thread,
Exploring themes of death in war – absurd and arbitrary dead.
Stylistic choices echo Black Wave classics so bold,
Rural settings and low-class characters in bleakness told.
Black humor lightens tone; Gypsy music contrasts with tragic end.
This film is revolutionary; portraying Partisans as human beings to amend.
Subversive aspects arise; moral ambiguity on display.
Little distinction between victors and vanquished; who can say?
Increased creative freedom allowed this film to thrive.
Western audiences were surprised; no typical regime propaganda alive.
Imperfections aside; some segments feel prolonged.
Yet "Three" remains strikingly memorable – an essential work so strong.
Critical acclaim followed – Golden Arena shared with pride.
Nominated for an Academy Award – Yugoslavia's official entry inside.
Aleksandar Petrović continued success internationally won;
Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival for his subsequent work done.
"Three" remains essential within Yugoslav cinema's core;
War narratives challenged – human nature exposed once more.
