Poetic Film Review: The Leopard (Il gattopardo, 1963)

In twilight's hush, where shadows play,
A tale of noblesse and power's sway,
The Leopard's roar, a majestic sound,
Echoes through the years, a timeless round.

In Sicily's heart, a world apart,
Aristocrats held sway, a privileged art,
Their lives, a dance of elegance and might,
A world of privilege, where few took flight.

But change was coming, like a stormy night,
The Risorgimento's fire, a burning light,
Garibaldi's volunteers, with hearts ablaze,
Marched towards unity, in a nation's daze.

Don Fabrizio, a prince of old,
Watched as his world, like autumn leaves, grew cold,
His nephew Tancredi, young and bold,
Adopted the cause, with a heart of gold.

But amidst the chaos, and the bloodshed's stain,
A cynic's voice, like a whispered refrain,
Warned of the jackals, and hyenas' guile,
As the old world crumbled, and a new order's smile.

Visconti's lens, a sharp and critical gaze,
Reflected the class struggle, in a world of daze,
A Marxist's perspective, a lens of insight true,
Illuminated the darkness, and the world anew.

Lancaster's Don Fabrizio, a contemplative heart,
A passive prince, with a world apart,
Burt Lancaster, a Hollywood star,
Came to Italy, with a critical scar.

The soundtrack's lack, a minor flaw, it's true,
A grandeur that eluded, like a fleeting dew,
But the film's essence, a timeless, poignant tale,
Remains, a masterpiece, that will forever prevail.

The Leopard stands, a monument of old,
A testament to class, and power's hold,
A world of contrasts, where shadows play,
A timeless tale, of humanity's complex way.
