Poetic Film Review: Eragon (2006)

In Hollywood's halls of cinematic woe,
A trend persists, both sad and slow:
Good books, adapted with great care,
Turn into films that disappoint and mar.

Eragon, once a novel of young adult fame,
Now a film, a misfire, bearing its shame.
Christopher Paolini's work, though not refined,
Found success, and Hollywood took its time.

A world of Alagaësia, ruled by tyrant's hand,
King Galbatorix, played by Malkovich, grand.
A rebel elf, Arya, with Sienna's grace,
And Durza, Carlyle's dark sorcerer, in his place.

Eragon, the farm boy, with Ed's naive charm,
Begets Saphira, his dragon, a bond to disarm.
Brom, wise mentor, Irons' voice, guides the way,
As they join Varda's fight, in a perilous fray.

Paolini's novel, though flawed, found its place,
But the film, with Fangmeir's directing face,
Lacked epic grandeur, despite its Hungarian sets,
And visual effects, though decent, left spectators vexed.

The script, by Buchan, one-dimensional characters bore,
Rich plot compressed, simplified to a mere score.
The final battle, forgettable, fell short of the mark,
A far cry from the epic confrontations in the dark.

The cast, with Speelers' unconvincing lead,
Malkovich's clichéd villain, Carlyle's makeup bled.
Jeremy Irons, Brom, a spark of life he brings,
A glimmer of hope in this cinematic ring.

Though critics panned the film, and fans were hostile too,
Commercial success, albeit modest, saw the film through.
20th Century Fox, deterred, scrapped plans for a sequel,
Paolini, undeterred, continued to build his Eragon's appeal.

Now, a television series reboot, a chance to redeem,
For Eragon's fans, a new hope, a chance to gleam.
The trend of adaptation's woes, Hollywood must learn,
For in the shadows of failure, true success must yearn.
