SELF-ESTEEM
Before we think of what others think of us, how we feel about ourselves matters a lot. You know, we will do more, and achieve more amazing results when we feel good about ourselves and our abilities. This way of evaluation and having a feeling of respect for yourself is self-esteem. It basically reflects what we believe we are.
Around us, we get to see people who have built a high self-esteem in themselves, and also, those with low self-esteem. Most of the time, people with high self-esteem are more productive and efficient. Some times, we often wonder how they stay happy all the time. On the other hand, those who have little/no self-esteem don't feel good about themselves in any way and may be depressed. For no necessary reason, they may tolerate abusive situations and do nothing about it---because they feel or have been made to feel they deserve less of anything good about life.
Self-esteem, whether high or low, is built in our daily endeavours and can be influenced. However, because it is 'self' esteem, an individual chooses how to build it and decides what influences it. Poor upbringing, past failures and fear may inhibit self-esteem. It is not so bad if failure happens. What really matters is who we think we are -- do you think you're a failure at everything because you failed before? Or you believe in yourself and see yourself get better at achieving your goals? Sometimes, we think less of ourselves and drain every self-regard we have because we feel others do better or we buy into them telling us what we can't do. Actually, a high self-esteem is a strong defence that shields us from hurtful confrontations and from feeling inferior to others.
The feeling of worth for oneself goes a long way. It starts with identifying who we are, what we're good at, and celebrating the uniqueness of our being. We get better as we invest in our areas of strength and affirm ourselves with positive words (tell yourself you're amazing at what you do and be proud of who you're becoming). Always remember---a good self-esteem gives us the courage to consciously live each day of our lives to the fullest!
