GOAL SETTING 101: WHY PEOPLE DON’T SET GOALS AND WHY THEY ACTUALLY SHOULD
If you look around you, you will get to discover that many people actually leave their lives without setting certain goals. The worse scenario most times is watching those who don’t have goals wanting the big things of life. They are most times just dreamers- and mere dreams alone cannot take someone far until it is converted to a goal.
Hi there and welcome to my blog today. My name is Great Morgan and it is my pleasure to have you here reading this post. Today we would be looking at a critical issue when it comes to setting goals. A lot of people don’t set or have goals because of various reasons. Hopefully, I would be discussing these reasons and how we can either overcome or totally avoid these reasons. Do enjoy your read and try to make a contribution at the end of the post.
So the question we have here is a very serious one. Why do people avoid setting goals? Why don’t people have goals? Humans are quite goal seeking in nature- which means inside every one of us is an urge or instinct to achieve something extraordinary. There are tons of reasons why people don’t set or have clear, written, measurable and time-bounded goals that they could work towards but in this post, we would just be looking at about three of those reasons.
1. PEOPLE FEAR FAILURE
One of the major reasons why people actually do not set goals is because they fear failure. Let’s face it; nobody wants to fail even though failing is just a normal phase and part of life. People don’t want to fail because failure actually hurts, especially when you’ve spent your time, effort or resources on something and it doesn’t meet the required result.
Failure can hurt emotionally, mentally and most times financially. This is why people choose to be more careful and then settle for the comfort zone rather than putting their effort in much or bigger dreams.
This is actually wrong to do because at the end, we are only sabotaging ourselves from the chance and opportunity to live life big. Settling for a comfort zone has never been a better way to success. In fact, settling for less because of the fear of failure can lead to failure in life, poor choice, undesirable outcomes and lack of fulfilment. It is necessary to set goals despite our fears because at the end, we can only achieve great things when we dare to achieve them.
2. THEY DON’T KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF GOALS
My father used to say “when the purpose of something isn’t known, abuse is inevitable”. It is true that when we do not know the importance of something, there are chances that we would not benefit from it or even use it at all.
Most people do not bother to care about the importance of goal setting, which is why they don’t set them in the first place. Sometimes, this could be as a result of their family or environmental background. When you grow in a family or with a group of people who have no goals for their lives, there are high chances that you won’t have goals yourself.
A lot of people do not invest in their personal development either by reading self improvement books, blogs, websites, listening to audio tapes or watching important videos that can groom one’s life. They are not familiar with the act of setting goals and therefore do not set goals for themselves. If you fall into this category, all you have to do is to spend more of your free time reading quality self improvement books or use the internet to get more access to articles or materials that are online that would guide you on how to set goals and crush it!
3. THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO
My last reason for today on why people don’t set goals is simply because they don’t know how to. Just like the millions of people who still haven’t made a clear list of goals to accomplish in various areas of their lives, I too was confused on how to go about setting goals.
Goal setting is a tedious task because it is not just about writing down a wish list but rather putting to writing a list of clear, précised, measurable, time bounded goals that have been structured to fit into various areas of life. Many people do not what goals are and as such they end up just having a list of fantasies. Things like ‘make money’, ‘have plenty money’, ‘travel abroad’ and other vain wishes are most times used to represent a goal- which is wrong.
The best way to go around this if you happen to be stuck in this area is to dedicate to reading and self educating yourself. You have to either have mentors or role models who use the act of goal setting to shape their lives and learn from them. You can also dedicate to using the internet to look for simple ways to start writing goals and set them. There are tons of self help materials that can literally take you from being the person that has no goals yet to the person crush daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly goals.
Amazing post bro. Your goals helps you keep things in perspective
Thanks for the comment man..
you're totally right. Goals will always keep things in perspectives and you'll learn how to channel your energy better when you have goal
Football without goals is really missing somthing. Its only on few occassions that a match without goals can still be very ok. Eg: Nigerian vs Argentina. And same for our lifes. Set your goals always.
