AUTHORITY AND REBELLION: A MOTIVATION FOR YOUTHS

INTRODUCTION
Some of the problems teens faced as a result of the changes going on in their bodies are rooted in rebellion. The word authority means to have charge or rule over one or more people. In life, there are authority figures placed in virtually every place you find yourself as a individual and these are people who are usually older and more experienced than you. They are usually trained either by age, experience or actual training to occupy positions. These people are located or positioned there for the purpose of seeing to it that you and other people under them are well looked after and law and order is maintained.
These people are called “constituted authorities”. These constituted authorities see to it that the different places are not just well run, but that the people like you that find themselves there do not get into trouble. For that reasons, you as teens have a duty and responsibility to respect them and submit yourselves to them for your own good. When you do not submit yourself to such people, you are said to be in rebellion.
Question: What is rebellion?
Answer: Rebellion is a refusal to obedience to constituted authority. It is also an act or show of defiance towards an authority figure; it is a fight or struggle against any kind of control; it is an organized opposition intended to change or overthrow existing authority. In the light of these definitions, rebellion encompasses a range of behavior from disobedience in the home, to civil disobedience and non-violent resistance, to violent and organized attempts to destroy an established authority. However, wherever the act of rebellion is practiced, it is not a positive act neither does it have positive results. The negative results may be minimized in some teens, but it is still negative and even though the period of adolescence is seen in most cases as a rebellious period, it does not justify rebellion among teens. You as teen need to change your mind and understand that you will save yourself a lot of problems and issues if you use the resources you have in form of the authority figures in your life. Respect them and obey them and it will make things a whole lot easier for you.
Examples of such people are: Parents in the home, head teachers, Teachers, Counselors in schools, Pastors, Vicars, Bishops, in Churches, Imams and Alfas in Mosques etc. these people are trained to lead and direct you especially when you don’t know what to do. They have been through all the experiences you are passing through so they can offer help and counsel when the need arises.

The potential problems include:
Premarital sex
Teenage Pregnancy
Unsafe Abortion
Death from Unsafe Abortion
STIs (Sexual Transmitted Infections) including HIV/AIDS
Drug Abuse
Prostitution
Multiple Sexual Partners
Early Marriage
Dropping out of School
Poverty as a Result of not Enough Education
Looking at these problems, it is certain that no teenager will set out to get involved with any of these, but the fact is that when you decide not to obey the authority figures placed in your life, you unknowingly expose yourself to one or more of these problems.
In conclusion, if you as a teen make a decision to submit to, respect and obey these authority figures as you come across them, you would have made a decision not to have any part of these teenage issues or at the very least you will limit your chances of having them. No matter how you feel, even if you feel the pressure to rebel, understand that rebellion will only complicate your life and add to the challenges you will almost face being a young person so it is wise for you not to rebel, and also do not keep the company of rebels. IT IS NOT “HIP” TO REBEL!!! Everyone’s not doing it.
Question: what about the people in authority who do use their position to abuse teenagers?
Answer: You need to avoid such people and at the earliest opportunity report them to other authority figures who can restrain them e.g. if a teacher in your school tries to abuse you or any of your peers, report such to a higher authority such as the head teacher, or to your parents who are better to handle the situation.
At this point, I want to address the question; why do I get bored easily? I’ll answer that question with another question-

what is boredom? Answer: Boredom is a state of the mind based on an imagination that you are not doing the things you should be doing (and so you lose interest), things that are termed “hip” or “fun” like youngsters your age in places like the USA and Britain etc. then your mind tells that for that reason, you should be bored. That is a deception. Understand that there are times you have to do things that are not as exciting as you would like so that times of fun can be real fun. Life is a balance and things must be done in proportion. When you understand and accept that, you will then find that things that you thought were boring are in fact necessary for you to do. Also most teens relate to the more advanced country through the television, cable and the internet and that view cannot be said to be accurate since all those avenues mostly showcase scenes set up for the purpose of recording for transmission to the viewing public. The fashion, entertainment and sports world are also mostly responsible for the ills even their own societies are battling with in the times we are in, so you need to be careful not to get carried away by all those things the media world presents.
