A boy and a girl in their 20s were traveling together when they're ambushed, dragged off a motorcycle, thrashed, and forced to get married by a mob or "moral police".

Goalpara District, in northeast Indian state of Assam

PROVOCATION

Traveling on a motorcycle together while being unmarried.

THE AMBUSH

The mob waylaid the unmarried couple and assaulted them on June 19, 2018.

THE MARRIAGE

According to sources, the villagers held a meeting and joined the two in marriage under mob pressure.

POLICE CASE

The police registered a suo motu case and launched an investigation. Two persons have been arrested so far – one arrest on Thursday and the other on Friday.
