How to build a successful career doing what you love? (Part 5)
In this part of the article series, we’ll dismantle common roadblocks, such as doubtful parents and peers, fear offailure, and paralysis by analysis.
What mental roadblocks are holding you back?
“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully,
the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often
surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only
tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
Just like the monster under the bed, our doubts make us run back to our comfort zone and hide under the covers. We want to chase our dream, but we can’t stop fretting over our fears. “I don’t have the talent to pull this off. . . . I’ll probably end up broke. . . . Everyone will make fun of me if I fail. . . . There are tons of people already doing what I want to do and I’ll never be as successful as them.”
Mental roadblocks are natural and we all suffer from them in one way or another. Let’s explore and dismantle eight common roadblocks:
- Seeking Approval from Parents or Loved Ones
- Fear of Failure
- Fear of Giving Up Security
- Your Inner Critic
- Believing Your Dream Is Silly, Selfish, or Frivolous
- Thinking Your Dream Is Unoriginal
- Hero Worship
- Paralysis by Analysis
