Can you mine cryptos for free?

Today I am going to teach how to earn bitcoins by mining for FREE. No need to pay for hardware or electricity.

If you follow me then you will know that I try to find ways to save nature. I often find that computers and servers keep running after office hours simply because people are too lazy to shut them down or put them to sleep. I work in an RnD lab and we have powerful servers which does nothing most of the time. Then it rang my bell! What if we mine with these powerful machines, at least they will be doing something useful instead of eating up energy. So, if you have computers in your workplace which does nothing useful but is always powered on you can mine too all for free. How will you do that? I will discuss below:

  1. Signup at minergate: https://minergate.com/a/7ba79facc364b6032c0ce3a6

  2. Use minergate-cli application. Minergate is a mining pool with wallet. It makes mining as simple as possible. So go to their website, signup and download the console miner for your OS.

  3. Run the minergate-cli on a server or machine that does nothing useful most of the time. Ssh from a terminal to a server. Command: ssh user@ip_of_server
    Example: ssh [email protected]
Here xyz is a username which is present in the server. You must provide the password to log in.

  4. On your local machine goto minergate website download section and get the download link.

Right click on 'Get it' and copy the link address.

  5. Once you are logged in to the server to the server, use wget to download the console miner.
    Run this command to install MG-CLI: sudo apt-get update && wget https://minergate.com/download/deb-cli -O minergate-cli.deb && sudo dpkg -i minergate-cli
This will download the software on the remote server and install it. Above example is for ubuntu. Similar steps can be found for windows and mac.

  6. Now for the fun part we will use nohup command. This is a no hangup command. When we close the terminal or connection to the server, the process will keep running.
Example: nohup minergate-cli [email protected] -bcn &
Here replace [email protected] with your minergate email Id.
Replace bcn with any supported currency like xmr that you want to mine

  7. Optional you can specify the number of cores like this:
    nohup minergate-cli [email protected] -bcn 18 &
Here 18 cores are used for mining. The server I use has 24 cores in total. So I keep some cores free.

That's it. Close the terminal. You are mining for free! Use the money for some good purpose.

Some more info:

  1. I used nohup and & to make the minergate-cli run in background. This will prevent anyone form killing the application.

  2. To kill it use these commands:
    ps -ef | grep minergate
This will show you the process ID of minergate.

  3. Use the kill command to close minergate as follows:
    kill 12345
Here 12345 is the process ID of minergate. Replace it with whatever process ID you found in the previous step.

To get a rough estimate of how much you can earn, minergate includes an excellent calculator. Just put your hashing power to find out which coin is most beneficial to mine. I get approximately $1.2 of Bitcoin everyday. This is at today's(30/06/2017) rate of Monero to Btc conversion rate. This may increase in future.

You can use this guide to mine at your home too.
So Happy Mining. Full Steem Ahead!

Hello there and thank you for your informative post. It seems like a great idea to use these unused CPU cores to mine a little. But also perhaps a bit risky because it seems the company might notice if you were to dedicate a lot of resources towards your own personal gain. But to me personally it really seems ok as long as you would not exceed any kind of normal usage of the servers. Seems fair enough as long as all the systems keep running at the maximum potential like they are supposed to when the miner software would not be running at all. Have fun out there and good luck with your future posts.

Correct. I don't use them for my personal gain anyway. I run a community called greenit where I donate anything I can from crypto. We buy food and meds for street dogs and cats.

minergate takes a while to pay.
