[Beginner guide] MinnowSupportProject - From Minnow to Dolphin to Whale, with the help of a great community
MINNOW SUPPORT PROJECT

Starting out on Steemit, it can all feel very overwhelming. I had the same feeling when I joined this platform, today exactly two weeks ago. I began by introducing myself (as most of you will do), posting my first blogs and commenting on cool stuff I read and saw on the platform. I made connections through my replies and through the Steemit chat. My earnings improved by the day. It all felt good.
But then I started digging a little further - there had to be more to this community?! - and I came across an article by @aggroed. The post introduced a new initiative to help newcomers with little voting power (i.e. "Minnows" or small freshwater/saltwater fish generally used as bait...) to network with each other, share their blogs, promote their work, slowchat about what happened in their daily lives, and above all have fun. All of this is driven by the ultimate desire to help Minnows grow through improved quality of posts (more below), better networks on the platform and increased voting power. Yes, YOU TOO can grow from Minnow to Dolphin or Whale!
Minnow Support Project - P.A.L.net
Enter, the Minnow Support Project (MSP) and the associated Peace, Abundance, Liberty (PAL) chat on Discord.com. It was created only shortly before I started on Steemit and has already grown from 0 to more than 1,000 members in less than two weeks, largely due to the efforts of @aggroed and many other great contributors ((@ausbitbank, @teamsteem, @neoxian, @danielsaori, @sandstorm, @swelker101 and @gmuxx are just some of them, but others know who they are!).
The PAL Discord chat contains a lot of helpful information and supports you in using Steemit as effectively as possible. It is by far the best initiative I encountered so far to socialize with others, learn more and support Minnows in gaining influence on the platform.
Awesome, now how do I register and what are the most important functions?
After signing up, meet up with the members for a chit-chat at the # general channel. Then I would suggest to do the following to get you started:
- Go to # registration and type: $register steemit-user-name command to get a request from 2 bots, named @banjo and @minnowsupport. They will tell you to send $0.001 SBD to them with memo's attached. Transfer the amount and then re-type the command again and you are registered to use the MinnowSupport Bot and his pal Banjo!
- Follow @minnowsupport.
- Sign up to Steemvoter and make sure you have a voting rule for minnowsupport to support the bot and the community. If you're new, set VOTE POWER above 50%. You can always return and lower it later.
- Now you can make use of the bots if you think a post is worthwhile to upvote/share. Share your content in the # upvote-resteem channel and get it off the ground with some votes by using the $upvote postURL command.
- You can also go to the # follow-train channel and share your Steemit to gain some new fans!
- If you have gained some Steem Power (SP), consider delegating SP to minnowsupport, and help the community grow. Here’s how: SP Delegation. Remember: providing value to others is important to have long-term success on Steemit. Connect, share, and love!
There is so much more to explore, come find out and join us!
I will be ready to help you out should you have any further questions. But there are many others that will do the same.
Hope to see you there soon! Psst for a good start, tell them @Finance2Nomad sent you ;)
Cheers,
@Finance2Nomad
Hey, thanks for this. I followed the guide, and had the bot upvote one of my posts. That was very cool, but I'm not clear on what all's involved.
Can you answer these questions for me?
What is the SteemVoter "Vote Power Percentage" about? How does that work etc? I didn't see anything in the SteemVoter FAQ about "Vote Power Percentage".
How long is the wait time until you can have the bot upvote another post? Does this depend on something?
After I sent the bot the $upvote command, I saw that I had 36 upvotes from all these users. Did the bot cause them to all become aware of my post, and upvote it? Or were all those upvotes due to some kind of automated process?
I'm only seeing an "upvote" channel, and not an "upvote-resteem" channel. Has the channel been changed to only upvote posts now?
Thanks for your help with all this!
Sure, no problem.
Thanks for stopping by and see you around!
@Finance2Nomad
Thanks for replying my friend. I also realized that the #support channel is a place to go for help, if anybody else has questions.
Take care!

An excellent guide @finance2nomad ! Thank you for your contribution and support with the #minnowsupport project. I also joined about a week ago and I am so damn happy I did! It's an awesome community and you receive all the support you need! I highly encourage everyone that is still a minnow to join :)
Thanks for passing by mate, appreciated. Great to see that the project is gaining so much traction. @lifewithcrypto
