We're all insane, statistically
Have you ever had your headphones tangle in your pocket? Maddening isn't it? The way they tangle all up in your pocket seemingly of their own accord. Well statistically, it's very common,A research paper titled Spontaneous knotting of an agitated string by Dorian M. Raymer and Douglas E. Smith of the University of California at San Diego Department of Physics shows that knots in wires occur from length plus agitation plus the y shape of the headphones. Making it very common for knots from wires in pockets to occur.
I'm going somewhere with this trust me, now consider your phone or the computer you're reading this on. What is required for it to go right? Lots and lots of things! Electricity, circuits, the screen your internet, all need to work in tandem in a very specific way to be 'right,' and if anything happens to them outside of this window, you drop your phone or spill water in the computer etc it will be 'wrong.' Now the objects have no idea what right or wrong is, they simply exist in the states of matter, atoms in the void. But our perception of them is as working and not working, good and bad, because viewing an expensive phone that's screen had cracked as just atoms in the void would require an insane amount of willpower.
Insane, it's an insult today mostly, very few medical or scientific enterprises use the term. To be an insane, there must be a sane, but what is sane? We can look at history, philosophy, neurology, biology, people have sought astrology, phrenology, homeopathy, but no one's uncovered or decided on even a sliver of sanity. There is however, many many ways to be insane, insanity can be many different things. What is sane somewhere is insanely somewhere else. What you define as sane and someone else defines as sane could be galaxies apart. Because just like the headphones or the phone or computer, there's a very narrow window in which something is "right" and falling out of that window means you're 'wrong.'
So the next time other people criticise you for your anxiety, depression, stress or any of the many mind maladies afflicting people, and other people say to stop being such a drag, a worrywart or other garden variety insult, take a moment to consider this entangled headphones. Just because you don't fit someone else's very narrow definition of right, doesn't mean you're wrong.
