Mexico's federal government passed into law several amendments this week to the general law of health and the federal penal code which may make medical marijuana legal for production, consumption and distribution in the country.

The ramifications of this move could have far reaching consequences for seekers of alternative healthcare and producers who have so far been criminalized and forced into the black market in this country. This could also mark a decrease to the profits of the drug cartels in the country who control much of the marijuana production in Mexico, although it remains to be seen if recreational use will be legalized in the near future, which is still a big part of the market. We shall also see how the changes to the books affects local drug law and its enforcement.
