Now my video on ALTE vs. BRUE:

This is an informational overview video on ALTE and BRUE.

  • Apparent Life Threatening Event (ALTE)
  • Brief Resolved Unexplained Event (BRUE)

Both are protocols that can be used to assess a sudden and unexpected apparent life-threatening situation in a healthy child. Which is done by pediatrics worldwide.
ALTE is the precursor of BRUE, and is more defensive. Every child that satisfies the ALTE-criteria get additional diagnostic tests. In practise this is often not necessary. That is why BRUE is developed. BRUE is aimed at assessing the risk a child has on a severe underlaying cause. Low risk children can be send home, without additional diagnostics, and high risk children get the extra tests.

In this video I will discuss the difference between ALTE and BRUE. In addition I will also cover how to use them both, and what the consequences are for a high or low risk child.
