Imagine one apple. Multiply that apple by zero there is still one apple. Now multiply that apple by one, thus another apple is added to make the total of two apples, etc.

1 × 0 = 1
1 × 1 = 2
1 × 2 = 3
1 × 3 = 4
1 x 4 = 5
1 × 5 = 6
1 × 6 = 7
1 × 7 = 8
1 × 8 = 9
