Selecting a markdown editor can be a headache, more so when you have just heard about it after the steemit sign-up.

You want to type your heart out.

Not go through the trouble of searching for the editor.

But if you have just recently heard about Markdown.

Then you need to learn some basic stuff.

Like, the syntax, which would help greatly, rather than use the steemit editor.

Which by the way is good for typing shorter articles.

When the word count increases, there could be some formatting mistakes which would be hard to rectify.

And take up a lot of time than it should.

Quick Markdown Editors Review

  • Notepad [Win] - Good old notepad comes in handy when typing your inspiration. Only thing it doesn't show a live preview. File save type is ".md"
  • TextEdit [Mac] - Notepad alternative for mac.
  • Typora [Win, Mac, Linux] - With a live transition to markdown and a very clean interface. this editor is best place to start. Only free during beta. This article was typed in typora.
  • Texts [Win, Mac] - Texts isn’t free. It starts with a trial and then costs $19 for each user in a team or as a single license.
  • WriteMonkey - WriteMonkey is a free, Windows-only, standalone application.
  • Caret [Win, Mac, Linux] - There’s a free trial, but otherwise a license will set you back $29.
  • Markdown-Plus [Win, Mac] - After trial $14.99
  • [GhostWriter](https://wereturtle.github.io/ghostwriter/ - Windows and Linux) [Win, Linux] - Free application.

Note: I didn't include Haroopad, MarkdownPad 2, and MarkPad, as these projects seem to be not updated in a while. And no one wants to pay for not being updated.

For Markdown Newbies

In order to get to speed with typing markdown, please start with one of the 3 online applications from below:

These apps, in real-time, educate you in how to type markdown easily and efficiently with dual window tabs.

Markdown is not hard to learn with these apps.

Basic Markdown Formatting

Headline - "# Header"

As you go from H1 to H6, markdown goes "#" to "######"

Adding a link - [Text] (link) , without space between two brackets

Bold Text - ** Text **, remove the spaces

Text Strikethrough - ~~ Text ~~, remove the spaces

You can surely start your first steemit post with the above formatting.

When you start with any of the online apps, you will learn to type in not more than 10 minutes.

P.S. If you are looking for more Mac applications, check out this article.

If you already use Sublime Text, check out this article to turn it into a markdown editor.
