The New England Journal of Medicine* published today a landmark study of the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on patients suffering from Dravet Syndrome. Dravet Syndrome is a childhood epileptic disorder that is very rare and often leads to death. It is associated with prolonged and frequent seizures, growth issues and disruption of the parts of the brain that control autonomic function. Dravet Syndrome is particularly challenging for parents of children diagnosed with the disorder, as it is especially drug-resistant, which in many cases means unrepeatable.

The study, conducted by the CBD in Dravet Syndrome Study Group, found that when patients were treated with CBD, the average number of seizures per month dropped from 12.4 to 5.9. A reduction by half is a significant accomplishment in a field that has been frustrated with the drug-resistant nature of the condition. The placebo group had nearly no reduction in seizure frequency showing a drop of merely .8 seizures per month. The overall condition of the patients increased in 62% of test group, however there was no significant change in 'non-convulsive' seizures, which leads scientists to a new set of questions revolving around how CBD actually functions in regards to seizure treatments.

Of all the patients involved in the study, five percent of them became seizure free once put on a CBD regimen. Overall, the tests conducted by the research team simply add more credence to the ever-growing body of evidence that supports CBD and other cannabinoids as having medicinal properties. Going a step further, these tests show that cannabinoids have the potential to achieve results that pharmaceutical medicine has been unable to reach.
