In remembrance of Stephen Hakwing...

Stephen Hawking Dies Today, at Age of 76

Above is my drawing of Stephen Hawking and some of his famous equations. (It may not resemble the person, but I tried my best! 😓)

So the first thing I heard from my husband this morning was that Stephen Hawking had died. (He likes to start off a day by telling me the breaking news of the day.) Though I graduated with an engineering degree, I never dived deeply into astronomy an physics and I was never interested in this English physicist.

It was a movie <The Theory of Everything> (2014) that drew my first attention to personal love story of a man and his wife, Jane Wilde.

The Theory of Everything - Official Trailer

Jane and Stephen dated in Cambridge when they were both graduate students.
Jane received her degree in Spanish poetry; Stephen studied cosmology and astronomy.
Jane had sincere and profound belief in Christian religion; Stephen was an atheist and believed that no God existed in the world.
What contrasting beliefs these two had!

One day, Stephen is diagnosed with motor neuron disease. His life expectancy was only two years.

  • Motor Neuron Disease (aka Lou Gehrig's disease) - a disease which causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles, eventually leading to paralysis. It is usually fatal within 5 years. (Source: Reeve Foundation)
Despite the hardship and limitations, Jane and Stephen got engaged. Jane was entirely committed to be his lifelong supporter and significant other until the day of his death.
"I want us to be together for as long as we've got."
- Jane Wilde

They were married for 30 years, with three children. However, the overwhelming family life, Stephen's relationship with a nurse, and contrasting beliefs with religion caused the two to separate. (More stories about Stephen's second marriage and divorce)

It's an emotionally touching film with beautiful love story and background scenes. I shed tears watching Jane and Stephen go through hardships together. 😭😭😭

When the movie was released in 2014, Eddie Redmayne won the best actor for his phenomenal performance as the perfect 'Stephen Hawking' character.

Several months before filming, Eddie Redmayne frequently met with Lou Gehrig patients and their family to study their lives. He organized his findings into a sheet of paper and carried everywhere he went. (How Eddie Redmayne Became Stephen Hawking in ‘The Theory of Everything’).

It's a great film to watch with a lover or family, but you could burst into tears and you might want to watch it alone. Watch the movie if you haven't yet. His performance will get you goosebumps, too! :)
