MY NYSC COMPANIONS
It all started with my passion for nature, animal husbandry most especially rabbits which I bought THREE of it (1 Male 2 Females) from my state in OYO down to my place of primary assignment (PPA); a place as far as Abejukolo, Omala LGA, KOGI state. Before I proceed with my story, let's see WHY RABBIT?
The rabbit is small mammals with whiskers and distinctive long ears. Its tail is very fluffy, short and round and it is called a bob. It is the most popular pets like dog and cat. There are about 30 species of rabbits around the world. Small rabbit species can be as small as 8 inches in length and weigh less than a pound.
The rabbits grow to 20 inches and more than 4 pounds. It is herbivorous. During warm months, rabbit eats, herbs, peas, grasses, clover, lettuce and greens. In the winter months, it eats twigs, bark and buds. They like to eat carrots. Rabbits live in a burrow, it will always very clean. A rabbit hops and can jump very far. It can make various sounds. Rabbits are very social, loving and interactive creatures and live in large groups called colonies or herds in a home called a warren.
Rabbits are prey animals. They are careful in open spaces. If they sense danger, they freeze and watch. Their vision is a very wide field, including overhead scanning. The animals like foxes, dogs, bears, racoons, minks, weasels and snakes are the enemies of rabbits. Birds of prey sometimes take rabbits. People are also known to shoot the rabbits because they eat crops. Their escape method is to run for their burrow, where they are usually safe.
FEEDING
Rabbits are very extremely easy pets to feed. It is important to make sure that they are being fed fresh hay and grains on a daily basis. Providing a rabbit with fresh well-washed vegetables every day is required for balanced diet and digestion. Fruits can be given to rabbits every once in a while as a snack, but it is important to keep a rabbits ‘fruit intake limited due to all the sugars.
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES
I got to my PPA safely with my pets, but painfully after a month plus, I lost the only male I got. Get the two females to mate with borrowed males proved abortive until I got to buy a male for myself. Even though many had lost hope on the Doe most especially when I lost the ASH coloured one which I presumed must have conceived then to an unknown sudden death. Many of my fellow corp members had suggested I killed it and at least enjoy the last one but with faith I kept hoping and checking every hole dug by the Doe.
And at last here are the
FACTS ABOUT RABBITS
The rabbits and hares are two different species. The biggest difference between the two is what their babies look like at birth. The newborn hares are born with fur and are able to move as well as see shortly after birth. Rabbits have a near 360-degree vision and can even see behind them. They have just one blind spot right in front of their nose. Rabbits are popular in mythology and culture. Many people believe carrying a rabbit’s foot will bring good luck. Their eyes are made for safety, too since each eye can rotate 360 degrees. This allows them to look behind them without turning their heads.
