San Valentine... Why is it called that way?

During the antiquity a pagan feast dedicated to fertility was celebrated in Rome, called Lupercalia. During this party the women expected to be beaten with whips made of the skin of goats and dogs, drenched in the same blood of these animals, since they believed that this ritual granted them fertility. Centuries later, in 496, Pope Gelasius I banned the celebration of Lupercalia and established February 14 as the day of the feast of St. Valentine. In 1382, the English writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, wrote a poem entitled Parliament of the Birds, in which Valentine's Day is mentioned for the first time as a day of celebration for lovers. From Chaucer's poem, Valentine's Day began to be considered as a day dedicated to love. Eighteen years later, King Charles VI of France created the Court of Love, through which, on the first Sunday of each month and on Valentine's Day, a series of competitions were held in which participants competed to achieve couple among the courtly maidens. In 1416, the French duke, Charles of Orleans, after being captured at the Battle of Azincourt and locked in the Tower of London, wrote a Valentine's letter to his wife Bonne of Armagnac. This letter is currently the oldest Valentine's letter in existence. From the fifteenth century, the celebration of Valentine's Day as the day of lovers, was popularized in France and Britain. With the passage of time, this festivity became fashionable in other parts of Europe such as Germany and Italy. Also, from the fifteenth century, it was customary to write poems or Valentines among lovers. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the commercialization of this festival began in Great Britain with the mass manufacture of generic Valentine's Day cards, with phrases and ornaments. [8] In Anglo-America around 1842, Esther Ángel Howland began selling the First massive Valentine postcards, known as «valentines», with symbols such as the shape of the heart or Cupid. Also on this day is the tradition of giving roses to those people who have a special affection.
There are several theories that give this date the origin of Valentine's Day. In the Nordic countries it is during these dates when birds are paired and mated, hence this period is seen as a symbol of love and creation.Valentines-Day-4K-Wallpapers.jpg
