God's love in the Last Supper: Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. John 13:1

Love is one of the most important themes of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. That is why the apostle John in his gospel described the love of Jesus at the beginning of this story: "It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end" John 13:1.
Jesus greatly loved his disciples, who were also his friends, as described in the gospel, that is why before starting dinner he washed their feet, performing an act of mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness). And then during the dinner, the Lord instructed the disciples in the way of God, in that way of the new commandment, which is the spiritual love, also called in the Greek language Agape.
In this way, Jesus reminded the disciples of the new commandment, of that love that is a perfection of God: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" John 13:34-35.
It is interesting to note that this moment in the life of Jesus has a notable parallel with Plato's story in his book the Banquet, because in this philosophical book where Plato had a meal with his friends, the philosopher also spoke to them about love, and of the most important love that is the love projected towards the whole creation of God, the love perfected by the nature of the good.
To understand this spiritual love (Agape) that Jesus taught is to understand the saving mission of Jesus, because this love is invariably associated with the doctor of the Church par excellence, which is the Holy Spirit. The spiritual love that makes man whole is a gift from above, as Paul taught with wisdom: "And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us" Romans 5:5.
