The art of Leonora Carrington / El arte de Leonora Carrington

Today is Leonora’s birthday. She was born in Lancashire, England, her Irish nanny told her stories about her culture, Irish folklore is full of magical creatures, heroes, monsters and mysterious lands.
Hoy es el cumpleaños de Leonora. Nació en in Lancashire, England,su nana Irlandesa le contaba historias sobre el folklor de su cultura, historias llenas de criaturas mágicas, héroes, monstruos y tierras misteriosas

Even though she belonged to a wealthy family and was presented in court, she never felt comfortable in her role as a lady destined to marry and raise children in an English manor.
After she was expelled from two schools, her family sent her to study art abroad.
A pesar de pertenecer a una familia adinerada y haber sido presentada en la corte, ella nunca se sintió a gusto en su rol asignado de convertirse en una dama destinada a casarse y criar hijos en una mansión inglesa.
Después de haber sido expulsada de dos escuelas, su familia la envió al extranjero a estudiar arte.

When she was 20 years old, she met surrealist artist Max Ernst and fell madly in love with him. They moved to France where they consorted with many artist in the surrealist movement; it was a happy time for them, unfortunately World War II put an end to their romance, Ernst who was German was arrested by French authorities, he was temporally freed only to be arrested again this time by the Nazis, managed to escape again and fled to the United states, abandoning Leonora.
Cuando tenía 20 años conoció al artista Max Ernst y se enamoró perdidamente. Se fueron a vivir a Francia donde convivieron con miembros del movimiento surrealista, fueron tiempos felices para ellos, desafortunadamente la segunda guerra mundial puso fin a la relación ya que Ernst fué arrestado primero por las autoridades francesas debido a su nacionalidad alemana y después por los nazis que consideraban que sus obras eran degeneradas, logró escapar a Estados Unidos abandonando a Leonora

Poor Leonora suffered a psychotic break and was interned in a sanatorium in Spain where she suffered cruel treatments like electroshocks. The Carrington family traced Leonora and decided to send her to South Africa for more treatments, she escaped with the help of Renato Leduc ambassador of Mexico in Portugal, they got married in a convenience arrangement and Leonora got a Mexican passport and diplomatic immunity.
Leonora sufrió un ataque psicótico y fue internada en un hospital mental en España donde sufrió tratamientos de electroshocks. Su familia la localizó y decidieron enviarla a un sanatorio en Sudáfrica para más tratamientos, pero ella se escapó con la ayuda de Renato Leduc, un diplomático Mexicano quien se casó con ella en un matrimonio de conveniencia para que Leonora consiguiera el pasaporte mexicano e inmunidad diplomática.

When she arrived to Mexico, she found a new land, full of magic and strange traditions, new colors, flavors and people.
Cuando llegó a México, encontró una nueva tierra, llena de magia y extrañas tradiciones, nuevos colores, sabores y personas

Leonora spent almost the rest of her life in Mexico City, she cultivated a tight-knit circle of friends with artist Remedios Varo and Kati Horna.
Leonora pasó casi todo el resto de su vida en la Ciudad de México, cultivó una amistad entrañable con las artistas Remedios Varo y Kati Horna

She fell in love and married Chiki Weisz, and Hungarian photographer and had two children. She created paintings with mythological creatures influenced by Celtic, Mayan and Aztec cultures. She refused to be a muse, she was “Very busy learning how to be an artist”. Wrote books, created sculptures, textiles, murals even a baby cradle and tarot cards.
Se enamoró y casó con Chiki Weisz, fotógrafo de origen húngaro y tuvo dos hijos. Creó pinturas con criaturas mitológicas influenciada por las culturas Celta, Maya y Azteca. Leonora se negó terminantemente a ser una musa, decía que “Estaba demasiado ocupada aprendiendo a ser una artista”. Escribió libros, creó esculturas, diseñó textiles, murales, incluso una cuna y un juego de cartas de Tarot.

She died in 2011 and was mourned by Mexicans, she was our last surrealist, she gained the love and respect of everybody who has the pleasure of contemplating her works, her sculptures adorn Mexico City avenues, has her own museum in San Luis Potosi and a magical garden designed for her benefactor Edward James.
Murió en 2011 y fué llorada por los Mexicanos, ella era nuestra última surrealista, se ganó el amor y respeto de todo aquel que tuvo la fortuna de contemplar su obra, sus esculturas adornan las avenidas de la Ciudad de México, tiene su propio museo en San Luis Potosí y un jardín mágico diseñado para su benefactor Edward James.

I saw the exhibition of her works in 2018, to celebrate her 100th birthday, it was a magical day.
Tuve la fortuna de ver la exhibición con que se celebró el aniversario 100 de su nacimiento, fué un día mágico
