I Almost Got in the Wrong Car (And It Wasn’t an Accident)

Okay, so this happened to me the other night, and I still get chills thinking about it.

It was around 9:45 p.m., and I’d just finished grabbing some snacks at this little grocery store near my place. I was tired, ready to go home, and my Uber was supposed to be waiting for me right outside.

The car looked normal enough.
A black Honda — pretty common. Same model, same color, even the license plate was almost the same. But when I got closer, something felt... off.

The windows were super darkly tinted. The driver wasn’t looking at me or anything. Just sitting there, hands on the wheel, staring straight ahead like he was waiting for something.

No “Hey, are you [my name]?” No wave. Nothing.

I went to open the door anyway.
Because, well, I was tired and just wanted to get home. But then I stopped myself. My gut told me to check the plate again.

And that’s when I saw it — one number was different. Just one number, but enough to know this wasn’t my ride.

The real Uber was pulling up behind me.
I turned around to see it. Meanwhile, the first car just sat there, still, then slowly pulled away without turning on any lights or signaling.

Honestly? It freaked me out.

I don’t know what that guy was up to.
Maybe he was just some creep waiting for a chance. Or maybe nothing at all.

But I’ve never been so thankful for that little voice inside that made me pause and double-check.

Here’s the thing we forget:
We assume the world is safe because things look normal.

But sometimes, danger doesn’t shout. It just quietly waits in a car with dark windows.

So, yeah — always check the license plate. Always trust your gut.

That one second of hesitation? It could save you.
