How to strengthen the spirit, improve oneself and achieve life goals

in #life4 months ago

Asceticism involves intentionally giving up certain pleasures or needs of the body and mind. The word comes from the Greek askeo, meaning "to exercise" or "to train." It can be short-term, like avoiding certain foods during fasting, or long-term, such as staying away from foul language for a year.

People often choose asceticism to strengthen their spirit, improve themselves, or reach a specific goal. For example, someone might avoid alcohol and entertainment while preparing for a difficult language exam.

For instance, a goal like “becoming more organized to meet a deadline” is clear and doable. But aiming to “be perfect and good at everything” may lead to constant feelings of failure. When choosing to practice asceticism, it's crucial to ask yourself why you want it.

There are different types of self-imposed restrictions.

Physical restrictions involve stopping or limiting the consumption of certain food or drinks. For example, avoiding sweets, fast food, alcohol, smoking, or sex.

Emotional and spiritual restrictions can include practices like the vow of silence or avoiding using bad words. Some also avoid emotional disputes, preferring to discuss issues calmly rather than argue about personalities.

Intellectual limitations might mean cutting down on news or not watching any updates at all. Many find this hard because they feel knowing what’s happening helps them feel in control. Limiting information can make them feel more helpless.

It's important to remember that true ascetic restrictions are difficult to handle. Giving up wine once a year isn't true asceticism for someone who drinks very little.

Over time, your efforts may become habits and even bring some satisfaction. It makes sense to try more serious restrictions if you have a clear, real goal that demands self-control and discipline. Just be sure these changes don’t cause unnecessary stress or tension.

Originally, asceticism was a religious practice. Practices like living in solitude, monastic life, or fasting are well known examples.

Today, though, restrictions are not always linked to religion. Many myths surround them. Some people see asceticism as a kind of magic. There are online stories claiming that certain restrictions can help fulfill wishes. Some believe if they give up certain things, they make deals with the universe.

They think that by refusing coffee, cigarettes, or other habits and promising to meditate daily, they can influence their future.
