I did join Mastodon when it was getting major hype. It was fun, but I find things like that eat my time. At some point the instance I was on died and so I'd have to start again and I haven't bothered yet. I've heard there's some in-fighting going on there, but then we get it here too. You need to find the right community for yourself. I also used to be on identica that was a federated clone of Twitter. That morphed into something else.
