The Clock of Life Is Wound But Once
“The clock of life is wound but once, and no one has the power,
To tell just when its hands will stop, at late or early hour,
So do today that noble deed, pursue it with a will,
Delay not till tomorrow, your hands may then be still.”
– Frank Tibolt
The above quote is taken from my trusty old copy of Frank Tibolt's A Touch of Greatness (an old-school motivational book). I find it quite a poignant reminder of the scarcity of time and the fragility of life.
It's important – and very sobering – to be reminded that your hands too will one day be still. It will happen to us all – no exceptions. What important tasks are you putting off? What cherished ambitions are you neglecting?
People say, “it's never too late” - to learn to speak French or start a business or to see the Great wall of China, etc. This is true to some extent. But one day it will be too late – the clock of life will have run its course and it'll all be over.
Does this sound morbid? It shouldn't be seen this way; use it as a bit of impetus to get going with what matters to you. Create a wallpaper with Tibolt's quote and put it on your desktop. Or print it out and put it on your fridge door. If not, you'll soon forget it.
