Resurrecting Earth and all life it supports.
Resurrection or restoration of earth.
Why is it important? Because the future of mankind and other millions of species who live on earth, depends on it. For thousands of years we have lived and survived on this planet, used it's resources. Some contributed in restoring it's natural deposits but most of us not. And now after all these years, earth has finally started to show off signs of wear and tier. These changes seem slow to us but they are happening way too dangerously fast, if accounted in terms of universal time.
Let's look into some facts:-
-Water Shortage- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations predict that by 2025, 1.8 billion people will have no water to drink.
-Oil Shortage- Our current oil reserves will only be enough to supply the world demands for the next 46.2 years.
-Waste- 1288955700+ and counting tons of waste dumped globally, this year. 1.69+ and counting number of planet Earths we need to provide resources and absorb our waste.(data taken from theworldcounts.com).
This list of depleting resources and global problems goes on.
Now, let's look into probable solutions:-
-Using Renewable Energy Resources
-Saving Resources
-Finding ways to restore earth's natural wealth, and more.
Now let's look into stats, how different nations are applying to it:-
-By the end of 2016, cumulative photo voltaic capacity increased by more than 75 gigawatt (GW) and reached at least 303 GW, sufficient to supply 1.8 percent of the world's total electricity consumption(data taken from en.wikipedia.org).
Let's ask ourselves this question. 'Is it enough?'
Absolutely not because we still have to use coal, nuclear energy to generate rest percentage(100-1.8 by solar -electricity produced by wind energy farms -electricity produced by hydro power plants) of electricity.
Now reserves of these non-renewable resources may be enough to last another century or two but will it be worthwhile. Because we all know how much pollution is produced in the process. Which in turn cause global warming which in turn cause rise in temperature and on and on and on. It's kind of butterfly effect, isn't it.
Leave the facts for a moment and just try to remember past ten years. The weather, seasons, quality of air around you. I am pretty sure some of us would agree that living on earth 100 years from now or let's just say 50 years from now would not be the same. Animals are also facing these adverse effects of climate change. Here's a list of the most endangered animals that may soon be part of history if drastic measures are not taken.
- The Bornean Orangutan
- Ili Pika
- Giant Otter
- Amur Leopard
- Black-footed Ferret
- Darwin’s Fox
- Sumatran Rhinoceros
- White-Rumped Vulture
- Pangolin
- Saola
- Vaquita
- Peruvian Black Spider Monkey (data taken from lifeadvancer.com)
Extinction would cause unbalance in the ecosystem.
Now there is one another method to save humanity and people love it. Yes it is ...
Making colonies on other planets, moons-
These things sound way cooler and fun than they really are. Just look into our current technology related to space travel. The world’s most anticipated rockets, the Falcon Heavy. It uses RP-1(Rocket Propellant-1 or Refined Petroleum-1) and liquid oxygen as rocket propellants. The Falcon Heavy was developed with private capital with Musk stating that the cost was more than $500 million. It is capable of lifting 64 metric tons (141,000 lb) into low Earth orbit (LEO). (data from spacex.com). Let's say average weight of a human equals 160 lb. So if we calculate (capacity of falcon heavy)/(average weight of a human), we get ~881 people. This is impressive still lot less if compared to total population of the world(more than 7.6 billion). I respect the work done by Elon Musk and they are working hard to improve on their technology.
But the main problems are
- Limited Resources
- Slow speed of space crafts
- Time taken in the journey
- Low capacity of space crafts
- Cost per person
- We do not have a confirmed planet or moon which could sustain life
For now space agencies are trying to colonize earth's moon, mars and venus. Just think about it for a moment, all of these three places are no similar to earth. Let's look into some problems we would face if we decide to live on any of the above mentioned destinations.
- Earth's moon has no atmosphere- Which means we would need to create artificial atmosphere in our colony or wear oxygen mask all the time. Asteroids, comets and other heavenly bodies can struck it's surface without facing any resistance because there is no atmosphere. That's why living on surface is not a good idea. Although there could future living inside recently found caves.
- Mars- NASA reports. “Arid, rocky, cold and apparently lifeless,” Mars will be a challenge to live on. Its atmosphere is almost 100 times less dense than Earth’s, temperatures average -81 degrees Fahrenheit, and it has 63% less gravity. All of those conditions, combined with lack of liquid water and oxygen, create really tough terrain for life to survive in.
- Venus- The surface temperatures are hot enough to melt lead. Venus is our solar system's analog to hell. Setting up a livable base on the planet is a feat far beyond our technological capabilities right now. Although scientists are trying to figure out ways to set up floating colony almost 5 miles above the surface.
Just think about it, is it possible or doable or even worthwhile.
Solving problems and breaking rules-
No matter how difficult they seem but theories like bending space & time, wormholes might just be the way out. Now, I know these are just the theories and we are far from getting our hands on them practically. Still, we need to believe on the work of great scientists. Just think about it, we can't just use conventional ways for traveling in never ending universe. And I believe it is meant to be explored, but we need technology way beyond our expectations. And it will happen, but it will take some time maybe 50 years or 100 years or beyond.
Artificial Intelligence-
Let's not get deeper into this approach but there are basically two things which could happen in this scenario.
- Humans develop AI alike human mind. Now this would require quite the resources but this could solve some physical barriers and help us get technologically advance way faster.
- Humans evolve and learn to transform themselves into computer programs and live like that.
Conclusion-
Al last I would like to give my view on this topic. According to me preservation of earth and it's resources would be the best way to go around. This would give us enough time for technological advancement without decreasing or scarifying the way we live or want to live. But this has to be a collective approach. Everyone should come together and do their part. Save and try to restore resources. Governments should come together and use their money wisely and on programmes related to earth preservation. And they should make it their main motive. Renewable energy industry should be reformed. Scientists and engineers should come together to develop ways of increasing renewable energy production.
