Langsat : Large tree with oval fruits
Langsat is a fruit not widely known outside Southeast Asia. It is quite popular in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Thailand actively exports it to other countries now. The tree's oval fruits look like small potatoes at first glance.
People often boil or can them. Langsat can also be eaten raw.
In Southeast Asia, langsat is very popular. It also grows in many tropical areas. Besides Thailand, Australia, the USA, Mexico, and Taiwan grow langsat. The langsat tree is slender and can reach 15 meters tall. It has oval fruits with light brown or gray-yellow skin.
The fruits are almost round. Someone unfamiliar with the tree might think it grows small potatoes. The fruits grow in bunches, adding to this impression.
The fruits taste mild. They are sweet with a slight sourness. The taste is like grapes and grapefruit mixed. To eat it, peel the fruit and find the round segments inside. These look like peeled garlic. The pulp is the part you eat.
Soft seeds may be inside. It is best to remove them. The seeds are not harmful. They just taste bitter.
