Past performance is quantifiable. Future potential is infinite. Choose your focus.

Past performance is quantifiable. Future potential is infinite. Choose your focus. The reality is that you cannot focus on both, at least not simultaneously. Attention should be given to both the past and the future. Focusing too much on one and not enough on the other will hurt your overall return. Focusing solely on the future, one would miss the learning opportunities which come from reflection. Focusing only on the past halts forward motion, which results in opportunities and the world passing up this individual. Diversification, through purposeful allocation, is essential.
The past isn’t useless – far from it. The past is the third most valuable resource we have. The past provides reflections on lessons learned. These lessons are invaluable. Reflecting on the past is so valuable, compared to the present and future, because it provides data to reflect on. Data is why “hindsight is 20/20.” If the future holds potential, and the present takes action, then the past provides data. This data helps us know what actions to take today so that we may better manifest and improve our potential in the future. The past is how we learn from the present… once it has passed. Learning from our past is what truly allows each present moment, whether a success or failure, to pay a return on investment for the long term.
Investing too much in the past can become catastrophic. In fact, too much investment in the past could be called robbery. You have seen the person who pours so much energy and attention to their past, he or she lets the present pass them up entirely. These people allow the past to define and limit them and their potential. It’s impossible to construct the future while letting the present crumble below it. Dwelling is not how one should utilize the past. Analyze, but never over analyze. This is a fine line, there is no doubt of this.
Somewhere between neglecting and dwelling, is a realm called learning. You must only interact with the past while within this realm. The past must be a stabilizer, not an anchor. Lean on this data when you enter rough seas which leave you unsure and uncertain how to proceed. In a rough and unknown ocean, throwing an anchor down is never the way to calmer waters.
The past is here to help grow the people and processes contributing to the future. We learn from the past so we grow into the people needed to increase and improve the potential held by the future. The past serves the future.
