Don't make "emotional" decisions!

So you have just met “the love of your life”, and he is truly wonderful, but your friends (or family) are voicing concern, should you listen to them? You probably wouldn’t, but the answer is that you probably should. Some good and sound advice for any relationship is that decisions should not be made when emotions are running hot. You simple cannot trust emotions.

When somebody sees cause for concern where you see only sunshine and roses it is time to accept that you are not seeing the whole picture. Emotions are really not the best foundation for any decision, and that is because they usually change. If I had a rand for every “Mr Wonderful” that became “Mr Hopeless” I would be a wealthy man, this is because emotions only allow us to see that which will support the emotion, and nothing much else.

You claim that since the person giving the advice isn’t feeling what you feel that they are unqualified to advise you. I disagree, I think they are able to see so much more about your situation than you can at that point. Not all advice is good advice though, I say take everything into consideration but don’t make any decisions until the emotions have abated somewhat and you are seeing clearly again.

So how do you know you are making an emotional decision? It’s actually quite simple, are you in a state of heightened emotion? If you are then you are making your decisions from that place, and everyone else is suffering for it. When you are on a roller coaster it is best to just enjoy the ride and leave the important decisions for when it all slows down.

If only we could get T-shirts that read “Don’t accept my decisions, I am emotional”, people tend to get hurt by emotional decisions. What you decide when you are emotional will be a cause for regret when a calmer mind prevails.
