Low self esteem & how the internet is killing our confidence

in #life8 years ago

We live in the time of Facebook & Instagram, where you can see celebs tweet and video chat from across the world!

It's amazing how technology has developed and thrived in the last 20 years! But why is it, when we have so much contact with the people around us with the simplest click of a button, people now feel lonelier than ever?

As great as the internet is, it is also a harsh and critical world. With celebs controlling the latest trends and girls striving to look nothing less than perfect. Half of the people I follow on Instagram if I was to go by the pictures of my friends and family, I wouldn't even recognise them in real life!

The world is so consumed with editing out our blemishes, and creating picture perfect images, that we forgot that that's what makes us who we are. Our faults, our blemishes, our scars, our laugh lines! People need to stop trying to be something which in real life is nothing like what we are! I am guilty and probably everyone reading this is guilty. It is this that makes us feel self conscious, the fact that when you look in the mirror in the morning you are not that picture perfect girl, like the photo you posted the day before. We are trying to keep with impossible standards, and so focused on how we look that we forget to have fun!

We forget to enjoy the people who are around us, instead we are too consumed in the latest tweet or post. I challenge you to put down your phone, keep social media to a limit and I promise you, you will feel happier and more connected with the people in front of you instead of the fake ones on your screen.

No wonder we feel isolated, we converse via our keyboards, emote our selves through emojis and see ourselves being ignored when you last message was seen 5 hours ago, but they still haven't replied. We need to stop relying on the internet to connect us and just connect in reality, meet up, drink, laugh, converse and put your phone down and enjoy life!
