Microsoft with another shady sales trick called "Windows 10S"

10 S

Microsoft has a long history of sinister sales and business strategies. If somebody would be interested I can create separate stories about each of them. But here I will cover their latest. Earlier this month Microsoft has introduced their new windows called 10S.

The main difference between Windows 10 and 10S is that user of 10S can not install 3rd party software. They are allowed only to install applications from Windows Store. So imagine you have a boxed software be it game or some productivity application you can not install it on 10S. Not even shareware of freeware applications that you can download from internet. Let's not forget that Microsoft gets a commission from applications sold in windows store as well as generate advertising revenue from free applications in store.

User is forced to use Edge browser. Microsoft invested substantial money and effort to create edge browser. However its market penetration is mediocre. In graph below it is show how poor edge is doing even in comparison with outdated and user unfriendly Internet explorer. In case anyone is interested in detailed statistics they can be found on netmarketshare.com

Another ridiculous restriction of 10S is that Microsoft forces users to use Bing search engine. It is not possible to change it in browser of choice Edge to other service like Google.

How is Microsoft going to extort money from its customers

Microsoft did all it could to push windows to as many machines as possible. To accomplish this in past they have made very lucrative deals for manufacturers who sold their machines with preinstalled windows. In the future it will stay the same. However customers would be able to buy their new PCs with preinstalled windows 10S. And if you are not happy with the restrictions mentioned in this article you can upgrade from 10S to 10 for 50$.

Sort:

Is this true? That is some real garbage from Microsoft!

Yes they have announced it as more secured version of windows and said that they are aiming for academic audience. They act like nice guys providing more secured system for education but bottom line is that they want 50$ for upgrade from every PC sold. Which they most likely get. Only grandmas and grandpas will skip upgrade because they don't care.

Luckily for some of us in the socialized countries of the EU, there is a court ruling that MS has to sell it's stuff to everyone for the same price.

Since MS wants to put Win10 on as many machines as possible, many OEMs or companies get the keys for free or nearly free.

You can then buy them from those OEMs (or whatever way that keys took) for cheap. You can get the Win10 Pro version for under 10€ (Home is about 25€).

It is very likely you have to use the phone activation, but after that you are... ahem... windowed :D

Of course if you don't need Win10 for whatever reason (e.g. gaming) then avoid that combined spy+adware.

Well I think win 7 is better OS than 10. But it is not going to be supported after 2020.
