ACTIVITIES THAT GRAND PARENTS DID FOR FUN AND RECREATION IN THE 1960S in Uganda
I greet you all in your different capacities, let me take this chance to welcome you all from your different places thanks for turning up for this occasion, I am meddie from Gogonyo, Agule sub county, Pallisa district in Eastern Region. Iam an Itesot by tribe, and I attained my high education from Pallisa Community Secondary School, where I sat my UACE from and currently iam in Uganda Christian University pursuing bachelor in arts and education. I hereby present you about the activities that our grandparents did for fun and recreation in the 1960s.
In my tradition being an Itesot by tribe my grandparents used to tell us that during the 1960s they spent their time in Beer parties, in that time they gathered in large numbers or groups and celebrate different occasions like naming of children, blessing the twins and celebrating for new harvest or the first harvest in this occasion they expose the newly born children to the culture by dropping local brew in the mouth and that was fun in their time and up today some people in my culture still do that.
They also spent their time in teaching the young ones how to cook and respect elders like the grandmother taught the young girls how to kneel when greeting elders or when serving them food and how to dress before the elders in that they had to use their fun time for advising the young generation which is done up today hence recreation.
The grandparents spent their fun time in hunting in the time of hunting they move in a group of big men who would be able to attack the animals like antelopes which was their favorite meat, after they had hunted they return and roast their meat in families and this was most of their fun times
In the early 60s the grand parents had their fun in telling stories to the young ones and telling riddles they mostly had stories that could bring up the young ones morally in the time of story telling the elders and children could sit around the fire since they did it at night they had to set fire out and people sit around the in the names of getting warmth this was one of their good moments and fun.
In the early 60s the grand parents had their fun in playing games like Omweso game, and the young ones had games like hide and seek, they also had wrestling which was the most game that gave them fun where they gathered and watched the winner in the time of wrestling this was one of the best fun times they had.
Around the 1960s the grandparents used to dance their local cultural dances like twist and also had a local dance known as dinging, they sang their local songs with their local instruments like grand form, instruments made out of wood and drams this was the kind of fun they had.
Lastly they also had their fun time in weaving home materials like mats made out of papyrus and baskets they also rolled ropes this kind of fun time was so creative to them whereby they also sold some for a living which is still practiced up today hence fun and recreation.
In conclusion the grandparents spent their fun time in beer parties, hunting, naming children and performing their traditional dances this is what is known of our grandparents in the 1960s.thanks for your time may God bless you and take you back to your destinations.
