Good afternoon steemit dah dah, this time I want to share a little story nuanced loaded with literature, which I happened to be interested in one of the Indonesian literature that is buya hamka, make steemit friends all may have heard of the novel titled Drowning When Van Der Wijck Buya Hamka ? Or a movie titled the same? For those who have read, or watch the movie must already know the story of the novel and the film is about the love story between Hayati and Zainudin.

The sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship is one of the legendary novels by Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah or better known as Buya Hamka. The first novel published in 1939 tells about the customary issues prevailing in Minangkabau as well as the differences in social background that hinder the lovers' relationship of love until it ends with death.

Despite the sinking of Van Der Wijck's ship, the story written by Hamka in the novel is of course fiction. Like most good literary works built on fragments of real events, Hamka also cultivates the heartbreaking tragedy in a fictional story that has been given a concrete incident with a plot that is so neat that the imagination of its readers has a foothold in the factual world. The main characters (Zainuddin, Hayati, and Aziz) are like individuals who actually live and represent the portraits of young people at that time when they meet the flow of change while the feet are based on customs and traditions.

Like the novel Siti Nurbaya, the novel sinking Van Der Wijck Ship also tells the story of love that does not arrive. The main character, Zainuddin, the son of the Swordsman Sutan who was exiled to Cilacap for killing his mamak in a property dispute. After his release he went to Makassar and in this town married Daeng Habibah. From this marriage was born Zainuddin. After his parents died, Zainuddin went to Batipuh, Padang Panjang, which was called his father's hometown. Unfortunately, there he was not treated well because it is not considered Minang children. Understandably even though his father is a Minang, his mother is a Bugis person so breaks up a blood relation according to matrilinear line which is nourishing to the mother.

Nonetheless, Zainuddin is in love with Hayati, a Minang girl who is concerned about her fate and often devotes her heart sadness to Hayati. As a noble descendant girl, it is certain that the Biological family prevented her from connecting with Zainuddin who was not a Minangian and also unclear of her future. The Biological Family chose the original Aziz Minang as well as coming from a distinguished family. Hayati must bow to the family agreement, although his heart is leaning towards Zainuddin.

Zainuddin considers Hayati has betrayed. In the end with a feeling of injury, he went to Jakarta, then moved to Surabaya. Meanwhile Hayati and Aziz who are married also went to Surabaya and stayed here for work reasons. Unintentionally, in an event they both met with Zainuddin who has become a successful person. While the economic life of Aziz and Hayati increasingly worsened. Aziz fell into poverty, until he and his wife had to stay at Zainuddin's house. Unable to withstand the agony, Aziz eventually committed suicide and first left a message for Zainuddin to protect Hayati.

Zainuddin who was once betrayed found it difficult to accept Hayati again. Feelings of love are still burning tried to extinguish. In fact he also asked Hayati to return to his hometown in Batipuh, even though the woman sulked him.

Hayati went home by aboard Van Der Wijck. But his unfortunate fate befell him. The ship that was drowned in the Java Sea. Zainuddin who heard the news immediately to the hospital in Tuban. Unfortunately Biological lives can not be saved. Since the incident Zainuddin often experience pain until eventually died and was buried beside the tomb Hayati.

The tragic end of the story seems to be an option to convey the message that love that is the root of one's happiness is often sacrificed for the dignity of the family or descendants. This novel is written as a critique of some traditions in Minang adat when it is not in accordance with some basic Islamic and healthy reason.
