I don't know what to say about that, but in my experience I think that is more in our minds. However I've felt and heard things at that hours. If I'm alone and awake at that hours I usually get scared for any noise.
It is also valid, they have instilled in us that fear that may not be more than in our minds, but as the saying goes ... From flying they fly
